Written & Directed by Elaine Constantine

Role: Head of Department

Ruth was the Head of Department (HOD) for make up and hair on ‘Northern Soul, the film’. Set in 1974, ‘Northern Soul the film’ is an authentic and uplifting tale of two friends whose horizons are broadened  by their discovery of soul music. The directorial debut of renowned fashion photographer Elaine Constantine stars Joshua Whitehouse, Antonia Thomas and Steve Coogan.

As HOD, Ruth and her team were responsible for bringing a full cast and nearly 400 dancers into the decade through hair and make up. Ruth had worked with Elaine and original members of the Northern Soul community to build a deep understanding of the movement.

Ruth created hair designs for classic 70’s cuts, and make up that would withstand hours of dancing in the decade-true textures and styles. Ruth also developed tattoo design, created traditional motifs of the genre, hand picked Indian ink scrawls and lettering of record labels and artists for dancers and cast alike.

Northern Soul was Nominated for a BAFTA for outstanding debut, London Circle Critics Film Awards for Breakthrough British Filmmaker and won the NME Best Film of the Year Award 2015.
